Barry Powell, Terre Haute Coca-Cola sales center manager presents Bill Tennis, Goodwill Industries executive director with a plaque commemorating the local Goodwill’s 75th anniversary. Barry is active in his community and was first elected to the Goodwill board of directors in March of 1989. In 1999 Barry was elected as Goodwill’s board president and he continues to serve in that capacity. Since 1927, 14 people have served as president of the board, giving countless hours to oversee, promote and foster Goodwill programs. Goodwill’s online auction site located at www.shopgoodwill.com was launched during Barry’s first term as president. Last year, under Barry’s leadership the agency served over 500 people with disabilities and other disadvantaging conditions. Almost a quarter of a million customers were served in Goodwill stores operated by the Goodwill agency during 2001. The online auction site continued to be a successful revenue source for Goodwill employment programs. The Goodwill recycling program kept millions of pounds of material out of area landfills and several thousand pounds of aluminum beverage containers were recycled during the year. Under Barry’s direction the agency was able to help many people become self-sufficient who participated in the Goodwill workforce development program. Barry’s commitment to his community is exemplified by his community activities. In addition to his involvement with Goodwill, he is a member of the board and past president of the Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club. Barry has been a member of the Terre Haute Rotary Club since 1978 and has participated in various club community service projects over the years. He serves as the secretary/treasurer of the Indiana Soft Drink Association and has been employed by Coca-Cola in Terre Haute, Indiana for 41 years. Barry and Harriett have been married for 41 years and have two daughters and two sons.
